The Department of Education, Training and Employment (DETE) has a standard Work Experience Agreements to be used where high school students (from state, non-state school and home education work experience programs) undertake work experience placements.

Conditions of Use

  • The Work Experience Agreement is only to be used for secondary students who are at least 14 years old and are enrolled in an educational establishment. Students should not be placed once they have graduated from high school (e.g. in the January after completing year 12). It excludes and should not be used for vocational placements governed by the Vocational Education, Training and Employment Act 2000(Qld) (VET);
  • The placement must not involve any payment of money by either party to each other or to a student;
  • You must ensure the Work Experience Agreement you receive is the latest version downloaded from DETE’s website;
  • No amendments have been made to the Work Experience Agreement;
  • You must enter into the Work Experience Agreement BEFORE the student commences work experience; and
  • You must have obtained any relevant University approvals to enter into this Work Experience Agreement.

Further information may be found on DETE’s website.

Work Experience – Insurance and Prohibited Activities

Education Queensland, Catholic Education and Independent Schools Queensland have insurance arrangements in place as detailed here (see word document: ‘Insurance information for Work Experience Providers”).

Please note that due to insurance exclusions, students are prohibited from engaging in certain activities.  These are listed in the document.

Students must NOT undertake any of the excluded activities.

Depending on the potential risks involved, you may be required to have performed a risk assessment in relation to the work experience placement.  If you have any queries in relation to a risk assessment, please contact the Enterprise Risk Unit.  If the work experience placement involves a high risk, please contact Legal Services.
